Recruitment Process

This recruitment process information is for the Administrative Support level 2 and 3 recruitment IN EDMONTON ONLY. When you apply for an Administrative Support 2 & 3 (Administrative Support Professionals) competition in Edmonton, you will be considered for Administrative Support level 2 & 3 salaried positions filled through the Recruitment Unit.

You will need computer access and a valid email address to complete the steps required to be successful in this competition. If you do not have access to a computer, please visit one of the Employment, Immigration and Industry service locations, or a local library. If you do not have a valid email address, please visit one of the many free email service providers found online.

Application

Administrative Support Professionals general competitions for level 2 & 3 are advertised on the Government of Alberta Jobs website. Only online applications will be accepted and only when there is an ad posted. Applicants will receive an e-mail acknowledging receipt of their application the following business day. Please include your email address on your application. Please ensure your education including related course work, software knowledge, as well as your experience including level of responsibility and the dates of employment are clearly stated.

Screening

All applications received on a competition will be screened and candidates being considered further will be contacted via email within one week of the closing date. If you are selected for further consideration you will be tested on your Microsoft Word and keyboarding skills. You will receive details outlining when, where, and how to register for testing. If you do not hear from us after one week following the closing date of the competition your application will not be considered further and you are welcome to reapply on subsequent competitions.

Testing

If you are being considered further in the competition, you will receive an email advising you on how to register for a testing session. There will be two tests which will take approximately one (1) hour to complete. The first will test your skill level with Microsoft Word applications, such as formatting, using tool bars, etc. The second will test your typing speed and accuracy. All tests are administered in our office in Edmonton.

You need to pass BOTH tests to be considered further in the competition. To qualify on the Microsoft Word test, you will require an overall score of 65% to qualify. To qualify on the keyboarding speed and accuracy test you will require a minimum of 35 words per minute with a minimum of 95% accuracy. At the conclusion of the tests you will be advised of your test results.

Those who successfully complete both tests will be invited for an initial interview. If you are unsuccessful on the tests, we encourage you to reapply on future competitions.

Initial Interview

If you are successful on the Microsoft Word and keyboarding tests, you will be advised on how to register for an initial interview with the Government of Alberta Administrative Support Recruitment Unit. You will be assessed on your knowledge, abilities and skills, and personal suitability for positions in the Alberta government. If you are successful in the initial interview you will be considered for referral to ministry specific vacancies. You will be informed whether you were successful or not via email in approximately two weeks of the initial interview. If you are unsuccessful in the initial interview, we encourage you to apply on future competitions.

NOTE: The Government of Alberta does not pay for travel expenses to attend testing or the initial interview.

Application Retention Period

Once you successfully complete the initial interview, your application will be retained for 6 months from the date of your initial interview. During this time the Administrative Support Recruitment Unit will refer you to ministry specific vacancies that match your skills, abilities and experience.

Referrals

Applicants who are successful in the initial interview are eligible for referral to vacancies as they arise in specific ministries. Referrals are made based on matching of applicant experience and skills to ministry job requirements. If you are referred to a ministry, you will be contacted for a second interview. You will be notified if you were successful or not in the second interview. To learn more about the ministries to which you may be referred, visit Ministry Websites.

If you are the successful candidate for the position you will receive an employment offer. If you are not successful your name will be placed back in the Administrative Support pool for referral to other vacancies that may arise that match your experience and skills.

If you are not placed in a position after 6 months from your initial interview, you are welcome to apply on the next competition when it is posted on the Government of Alberta Jobs website.
