Following is a list of profiles of the internship programs that are offered regularly in the Government of Alberta:

Alberta Advanced Education and Technology Internship Program

Objective:

  • With over 25 interns in the Ministry, Advanced Education and Technology prides itself on providing challenging opportunities to new graduates. There are opportunities for interns in a variety of different fields including but not limited to - Human Resources, Marketing, Finance, Policy and Planning, and Research. Being an intern with Advanced Education and Technology means you get challenging work and the opportunity to learn and develop in a fast-paced creative environment.

Duration:

  • Internships can be anywhere from 1 year - 2 years long.

Qualifications:

  • All internship position qualifications are posted in the recruitment advertisements. Required studies (typically a degree or technical school diploma) must have been completed within two years prior to hire date.

Alberta Education Internship Program

Objective:

  • Interns are hired into a variety of roles within the department in occupations such as Finance, Policy and Planning, Research and Human Resources. The objective of the program is to provide new post-secondary graduates with a meaningful employment opportunity.

Duration:

  • Internships vary in duration, to a maximum of 24 months.

Qualifications:

  • All internship position qualifications are posted in the recruitment advertisements. Required studies (typically a degree or technical school diploma) must have been completed within two years prior to hire date.

Alberta Infrastructure and Alberta Transportation Internship Programs

Objective:

  • Interns are hired into a variety of roles within these departments in occupations such as Accommodation Planning, Finance, Property Management, Land Planning, Leasing, Engineering, Finance, Policy and Planning and Research. The objective of the program is to provide hands-on experience in the businesses of the department and to demonstrate the benefits of working in the public sector.

Duration:

  • Infrastructure and Transportation Internships vary in duration, from a minimum of 6 months to a maximum of 24 months.

Duties/Developmental Activities/Placements:

  • Some positions may rotate to a variety of assignments while others fulfill their internship requirements in a single role. Each intern is assigned a mentor who remains a consistent contact for him or her for the duration of the assignment. Depending on the rotations undertaken, an intern could have a variety of supervisors.
  • The duties and activities of the internship are documented in a work plan that serves as the outline for the assignment.

  • All internship position qualifications are posted in the recruitment advertisements. Required studies (typically a degree of technical school diploma) must have been completed within two years prior to hire date.

How and When to Apply:

  • Applications are accepted only once the positions have been advertised. Positions are usually advertised in February and will include details on the application process. Positions are advertised on the Government of Alberta Jobs website and are typically posted at a variety of post secondary institutions in Alberta.

Alberta Investment Management Development Program

Alberta Finance and Enterprise

Objective:

  • To provide recent graduates with an excellent opportunity to gain practical experience in the field of investment management and to make them strong candidates for permanent employment within the Investment Management Division by building a broad based understanding of Alberta Investment Management.

Total Duration:

  • 24 months.

Duties:

  • Complete various investment projects relating to each of the assigned functional areas.
  • Apply fundamental financial, statistical, and micro/macro-economic concepts.
  • Research and financial analysis; reporting writing.

Developmental Activities:

  • Participants are developed through practical work experience and in-house training opportunities. In the first year, participants complete four 3-month rotations working on projects in the functional areas. In the second year, participants will have up to three longer rotations that will allow them to get involved in larger projects and take on a greater level of responsibility.

Placements:

  • Edmonton.

How Many Posted Positions Annually?

  • Usually one or two positions annually.

Selection Criteria:

  • Recent graduate or undergraduate (within the last 2 years) with a degree in business, science, engineering, economics, or mathematics and with specific education in the area of finance.
  • Demonstrated interest in the financial investment field.

Alberta Public Service (APS) Human Resources Internship Program

Objective:

  • This is a unique development opportunity to learn about human resources management with Alberta's largest public sector employer, the Government of Alberta. Over a twelve month period, you will work with talented human resource professionals and you will receive training and hands-on experience in job evaluation, staffing, employee relations, organizational development and effectiveness and much more! After successful completion of the twelve-month program, it is anticipated that you will continue your human resource career with the Government of Alberta in a permanent capacity.

Total Duration:

  • Twelve months (typically beginning in May to April the following year).

Duties/Developmental Activities/Placements:

  • You will develop your knowledge and skills through rotational assignments that are aimed at giving you a wide exposure to the multifaceted world of human resources. Rotational assignments include corporate placements exposing you to broad human resource strategies and policy development and a ministry placement where you will be exposed to human resource operations. The internship combines basic skills training in job evaluation, staffing and employee relations as well as specific job placements where individuals will gain practical expericence.

How Many Posted Positions Annually:

  • Varies (up to seven).

Basic Qualifications:

  • Individuals must be a recent graduate of a post-secondary institution (within the last 2 years) with a related degree such as Commerce, Business Administration, or the Social Sciences. Equivalencies are typically considered, such as a related diploma and two years related experience. Preference will be given to those candidates who have demostrated a commitment to the field of human resources through related work, co-op or volunteer experience. Municipal Internship Program

The Municipal Internship Program is designed to attract recent graduates to the field of municipal management. The program offers internships in various municipalities across Alberta and is sponsored by Alberta Municipal Affairs. More information can be obtained by visiting the program Web site.

Budget and Fiscal Planning Internship Program

Alberta Finance and Enterprise

Objective:

  • To provide challenging opportunities to interns that will enhance their knowledge, training and experience in a professional environment related to their career goals and make them strong candidates for employment in Alberta Finance and Enterprise and/or the Alberta public service.

Total Duration:

  • 24 months.

Duties:

Assignments will vary, depending on organizational needs and the intern's experience and background but may include the following:

  • Analyze fiscal implications of major spending programs.
  • Review and analyze revenue and expenditure forecasts.
  • Research, analyze, and make recommendations about tax policies and their application.
  • Prepare briefing material on federal / provincial issues.
  • Monitor economic indicators for the Alberta economy, assist in the preparation of briefing material and economic revenue forecasts.

Developmental Activities:

  • Interns are developed through practical work experience and in-house training opportunities. A flexible, 24-month rotation through a number of pre-assigned groups within the Budget and Fiscal Planning provides broad and varied work experience.

Placements:

  • Edmonton.

How Many Posted Positions Annually?

  • Usually one position on an 18 month cycle.

Selection Criteria:

  • Recent graduate or undergraduate (within the last 2 years) with a degree in public finance, economics, political science, commerce, public/business administration, management, or law and a demonstrated interest in public sector employment.

Public Affairs Officer Internship Program

Objective:

  • To provide the Public Affairs Bureau a pool of well-trained Public Affairs Officers that are able to move into permanent or project work vacancies as they arise.

Total Duration:

  • One-year - generally starting in July.

Duties:

  • You'll gain valuable hands-on experience testing your public relations talents by putting your writing, research and analytical skills to work.
  • You'll put theory into practice as you perform a variety of tasks ranging from writing news releases, speeches, articles and other materials to assisting in the preparation of communications plans, issues analysis, backgrounders and news conferences.
  • You'll polish your consulting, time management and interpersonal skills as you assist the communications team by providing comprehensive communications support to internal government clients.

Developmental Activities:

  • Interns will gain valuable communications experience through a combination of on-the-job training and specifically tailored Public Affairs Bureau in-house training courses.

In-house training courses include:

  • Consulting Skills, Crisis Communications, Public Consultation, Writing for Government, Media Training, Issues Management, Strategic Communications Planning, Practical Media Relations and FOIP Training.

Placements (Where/What Duration):

  • Public Affairs Officer Interns will be placed in different ministry communication branches over the course of the one-year internship program. The length of time spent at each placement will vary.
  • The positions are located in Edmonton.

Number of Positions Hired Annually:

  • Varies.

Selection Criteria:

  • Applicants must be a recent graduate (within the past 2 years) and possess a related degree or diploma in communications, public relations, journalism or English.
  • Preference will be given to those candidates who have demonstrated a commitment to the field of public relations through related work, co-op or volunteer experience.

How And When To Apply:

  • The employment opportunity for the Public Affairs Bureau Internship Program is generally posted during the month of May on the Government of Alberta's employment website, the Government of Alberta Jobs website and at selected post-secondary institutions in Alberta.
  • The closing date for applications is normally sometime between May or June. Selected applicants are then contacted to participate in a writing test that is held during May or June.
  • After reviewing the writing tests, selected applicants will be asked to participate in an interview.
  • Generally, successful candidates are selected in June or July, and their internships commence in July or August.
