On-The-Job Learning

Everybody knows the value of learning, but fitting it into an already busy schedule often seems to be an unsolvable problem. The solution: On-the-job learning.

 Learning on the job allows you to develop the skills you need without taking you away from the things you need to get done. It is more than just time and cost efficient - it's effective because you learn the skills you need in the environment where you will use them.

In this section of the toolkit, you will see ideas for on-the-job learning for each of the 7 core and 8 role specific competencies in the Alberta Public Service Competency Model. Each Alberta public service employee is expected to develop competence in each of the core and some, or all, of the role specific competencies listed, and the ideas for on-the-job learning are designed to help you do that.  Click on the competency you want to develop and read over the ideas for on-the-job learning that are listed.  Some things to remember:
